We are excited to annouNce and welcome the appointment of our new executive director, thomas hamrick, and the election of our board president, terri Leist.
This year our goal is to fill 11,400 backpacks for students throughout central ohio.
Last year we completed the filling and dissemination of 11,100 backpacks to students throughout central Ohio in conjunction with our 68 partner organizations including social service agencies, community groups and churches.
We are so grateful to our donors and volunteers who helped make this happen because we wouldn't have been able to provide backpacks for so many families without their assistance.
Please know that we believe our 68 partners are the best way to get our backpacks in the hands of students who need them most. thus, we no longer provide backpacks to individual families. However, if your family needs backpacks for this upcoming school year, we recommend that you go to the list of our partner organizations listed on this website (SEE THE ABOVE TAB in the upper right screen that says "ORGANIZATIONS WE HELP") and contact any one of them to see if they have available backpacks to offer your students.

Tom Fennessy/Mike Harden Back-to-school Project
Supplying equality to cenTral Ohio children.
purpose
the Tom Fennessy/Mike Harden Back-to-School Project (TF/MH BTSP), a registered state of ohio 501(c)(3) non-profit, was initially created to insure kids living in homeless shelters had school supplies. It was named in recognition of two Columbus Dispatch columnists who knew firsthand what it means to struggle. At its inception in 1998, the organization was able to donate over 365 backpacks filled with necessary supplies. In 2023, the project filled 11,100 backpacks with basic supplies for students from low-income families, grades K – 12, without regard to race, religion, or gender. This was achieved in conjunction with 68 social service agencies, churches, schools, and community groups who help disseminate the backpacks to those most in need throughout Central Ohio, through the generosity of numerous loyal contributors, and because the organization remains solely comprised of volunteers meaning the administrative costs are less than one percent of the total budget. Thus, over the past 26 years, the TF/MH BTSP has distributed over 193,000 backpacks to students who otherwise might not have been able to start off their school year with the necessary materials they needed.
